Behind Bars
The SLO Marketplace is dog-friendly, which is an excellent policy. It means Rory and I can inspect the shops, greet the visitors, and determine whether the restaurants are serving anything important.
Being on a leash is bad enough. Rory stopped to offer her condolences to someone spending the day behind bars.
She and the donkey were both grey, scruffy, and equipped with magnificent ears. But related? Hardly. Any dog could see that the donkey was a flight animal. Donkeys run from danger. We run toward it.
Grandma explained that donkeys have eyes toward the sides of their heads, giving them a wider view of approaching danger. Predators usually have forward-facing eyes, helping them focus and judge distance.
Dogs have forward-facing eyes. So do humans—which is puzzling. We already knew dogs were fearless hunters. Humans had fooled us because they mostly hunt for bargains, parking spaces, and somewhere to eat.
